Rachel Pears: During World Allergy Week, Viatris Spotlights a Mother and Son who Suffer from Allergic Disease and Asthma

World Allergy Week is an annual initiative of the World Allergy Organization (WAO) which aims to address the needs of patients who suffer from allergic diseases and asthma and those who provide
care for them.

In honour of this important initiative, we’re spotlighting Rachel Pears, mother and Key Account Manager at Viatris. Rachel knows all too well the importance of managing allergic diseases as both herself and her son, Henry, can have an anaphylaxis reaction to nuts. Rachel has always been extra cautious managing Henry’s condition since he was first diagnosed as an infant although notes the biggest issue was avoiding common nuts such as cashews, peanuts, hazelnuts and pistachios.

While Henry is now a young adult, Rachel and Henry know to stay on top of their anaphylaxis management plan. Rachel shares her tips for other parents caring for a child with anaphylaxis:

  • Ensure your medication is up-to-date and always on hand
  • Educate everyone that surrounds your child (e.g., teachers, friends, colleagues) on information related to their allergy and the potential for anaphylactic reaction
  • Reinforce strategies to minimise the risk of exposure to known allergens as they get older
  • Keep an open dialogue with your medical practitioner including an up-to-date ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis
